Abstract

ABSTRACT

Background : 80% of premature newborns reach 60% of term newborns in the first week of life. The main treatment for this case is phototherapy which has various side effects for the baby. Alternative treatments are needed to overcome hyperbilirubinemia such as using baby massage. Objective: this is to analyze the effect of baby massage on decreasing bilirubin levels in infants undergoing phototherapy. Method : This study is astudy Quasi Experimentwith a non equivalent control group with pre post test design. The sample consisted of 32 infants divided into 16 respondents in the intervention group and 16 respondents as a control group taken based on the calculation of the size of the comparative numerical sample which is not paired with two groups of one-time measurement. Data were analyzed using repeated ANOVA, Dependent T-Test, Independent T-Test, and Analysis of Covarians. The results showed the average serum bilirubin level after the intervention in the intervention group was 6.48 while the control group was 9.32. Decrease in mean serum bilirubin levels in the intervention group (7.21+2.59), while in the control group (6.51+3.30), there were significant differences between the two groups with a p-value = 0,000. The conclusion was found that baby massage as an alternative additional action that can reduce serum bilirubin levels effectively. Based on the results of this study Baby massage can be used as a nursing intervention in the management of hyperbilirubinemia infants in the hospital.
